About the Centre
The International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS, 文化研究國際中心 ) is an interdisciplinary research centre of the Faculty of Humanities at The Education University of Hong Kong. Established in 2022, the Centre brings together scholars in cultural studies, media and communication, literature, languages, the creative arts, and the social sciences to examine how culture shapes, and is shaped by, the defining challenges of our time.

The Centre is distinctive in its setting. As part of Hong Kong's university of education, IRCCS approaches cultural studies with a particular commitment to pedagogy, public engagement, and the formation of the next generation of researchers. Our work moves between the seminar room, the community, and the cultural institution, and we understand research impact to include what happens in classrooms, museums, neighbourhoods, and public conversation.
Our Mission
IRCCS exists to produce internationally significant research on culture and society; to serve as an incubator for early-career researchers and research students in the humanities; and to connect scholarship in Hong Kong with academic and cultural partners across the Greater Bay Area, Asia, and the world.
We pursue this mission through collaborative research projects, an annual programme of international conferences and public events, a refereed Working Paper Series, a research incubation scheme supporting early-career colleagues, and sustained partnerships with universities, cultural institutions, and community organisations in Hong Kong and beyond.
Our Research
From 2026, the Centre's research is organised into three clusters, which together carry forward and expand the research tracks that defined our first phase (2022–25):
Environmental Cultural Studies examines the cultural dimensions of ecological change: from multispecies relations and citizen science to eco-cinema and environmental storytelling. [LINK TO CLUSTER PAGE]
New Social Justice Studies investigates migration, minority communities, care, and cultural citizenship, extending the Centre's founding work in critical migration studies and comparative cultures of care. [LINK TO CLUSTER PAGE]
Sustainable Humanities asks how humanities scholarship, arts practice, and cultural institutions can model and advance sustainability: intellectually, institutionally, and in public life. [LINK TO CLUSTER PAGE]
Governance
The Centre is led by its Director, Dr Zoran Poposki, FRSA, FRAS, who assumed the role in 2026, succeeding founding Director Prof. John Nguyet Erni, FAHA, FHKAH, who remains an active member of the Centre.
The Centre is governed by a Management Committee [LINK TO PEOPLE PAGE], which oversees its research strategy, budget, and activities. The Centre reports to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and, through the Faculty, to the Vice President (Research and Development) of the University.
An international Advisory Board is being constituted in autumn 2026 to guide the Centre's strategic development in its second phase. Membership will be announced on this page.
